Mahabali the Rakshasa and Hitler the Dictator
Kings and Politicians rise to power in adversity and behave arrogantly. Hitler rose to power when Germany was in total shambles, economically. He adopted the Jew hatred policy and gained the confidence of Germans. We all know the rest – World War II and Hitler’s downfall.
Mahabali too a king who ruled India kept his people without any wants. There was abundance of crops, rain and happiness. Being a Asura by nature, he gained the power by unfair means, defeating all kings here and heaven. But he was arrogant about his offering to anyone who comes and asks for a varam (boon). So he offered the Vamana (Avatar of God) three footsteps of land. And the Lord measured the entire Universe in two steps and the third step he kept on the head of Mahabali and thus he was defeated.
Can any one give reason why the Keralites celebrate Onam, the greatest Kerala festival in praise of Mahabali? May be he gave his people everything in abundance and kept them happy?
Even Hitler would have given us what we wanted if he had come to rule the World. But at what cost? Lack of freedom, speech, free will and no freedom to practice religion of one’s choice – worst even for a Jew. Sure Hitler would have extended the hatred for Jews to other religions and the only religion would be to worship him – like the Mahabali wished. Hitler and Mahabali are not wanted.
