Cricket and Sporting crowd of Chepauk, Chennai
I was a few minutes late due to heavy traffic regulation and parking.
It was Pakistan vs. India test match in Chepauk stadium, Chennai.
I thought opener Zaheer Abbas must be out, as the news spread was Pakistan started batting first. But when I entered the stadium the roar was for a boundary by Zaheer Abbas off the first ball! Yes Chennai crowd loves the game, applauds, appreciates and gives standing ovation to any man or team who play well.
Even the Ad campaigns are a proof. During those days AIR-INDIA and Amul butter (Better Butter) used to put huge hoarding near Thousand Lights (there is a mosque with thousand lights inside), Wallajah Road traffic signal (a famous road near Chepauk stadium where sports goods shops are there selling mainly cricket bats and tennis balls).
When West Indies arrived AIR-INDIA put a slogan ‘Let the Best Indies Win!’
When Pakistan with Imran Khan arrived the slogan was ‘Bowl your maidens over’
And the crowd gave a standing ovation to Saeed Anwar who scored 194, a record in one day cricket and still unbeaten. May be Dhoni or Shewag can beat that record.
And the Lankans, Australians, English have all appreciated the sporting crowd of Chennai and entertained them.
I remember Ian Botham, Vivian Richards, Clive Llyod and Sanath Jayasurya enjoying the atmosphere and enjoyed the crowd roaring, music and rushing for autographs from the visiting team players.
One of my friend’s daughter who did not like cricket at all, went for one day to watch a match against Australians. The big Green ground, crowd and the match itself, amazed her. Now she watches cricket first on TV!
I am eagerly waiting for the next one-day or test match at Chennai. Even though TV relays are there the Chepauk is always full to the capacity.

HI ambimama,
Are you from Mambalam or T.Nagar? The Mount Road travel and hoardings of AIR-INDIA sure suggests that!
Any way you brought some really good old Cricket news which we all missed!
And I heard from my friends that a ball from Prasanna was hit by CLive Lloyd and landed on Bells Road. Is it true? And that Lloyd was out in next ball. Clever Prasanna. Should he not produce or promote Spinners? Sure there are Sponsors.

How can you “expect” Prasanna to produce spinners? Someone performing extremely well doesn’t necessarily mean they are good coaches/tutors/mentors.
Also, Prasanna cannot clone spineers on his own - there should some talent availble in someone for him to improve and develop that to international sporting level.

Hi AkashK.
Expereince is enough to pass on the stregnth. WHy a Denis Lillie foundation sposnsored by MRF? ANd it has produced nothing by Ads and sensation. I ask you to consider Schumaker, the team Ferrai and the sponsors!
It can happen in India if Prasanna has proper sponsors.
There is poltics inside BCCI also. Consider Baljai who bowls well and can bat also. Why was he dropped?

Dennis Lillie foundation is doing a very good job in correcting the bowling action and fine tuning bowler rythms. I agree, its not producing any new talent for the country, but maybe it was not setup for that reason - it was setup as a camp for international players to tone their bowling skills and get some professional tips. Bret Lee and others have spent weeks at the Foundation to get trained. Again, Dennis Lillie cannot be compared to Prasanna when it comes to coaching skills, maybe Prasanna does not have a coach in him.
