From April 14th (Tamil New Year), passengers of the (SETC) State Express Transport Corporation can book their tickets online from anywhere in the state.
The online reservation facility, which has been in operation for long distance express buses departing from Chennai for the last three years, will be extended to all other centres in the state from April 14. Passengers will no longer have to go to the SETC bus stand or terminus, stand in the queue to book their tickets.
They will, however, still have to go to their boarding point 30 minutes before the departure of the bus with the print out of the online ticket-booking acknowledgement, to pay the fare and collect the tickets.
The online booking will open 30 days prior to the date of journey. The service is being introduced following widespread demand.
The tenders for setting up the online ticketing service have already been finalised and the implementing agency has been asked to complete the work in 100 days, SETC sources told.
The SETC plans to implement e-ticketing in the next phase, to facilitate purchase of ticket online using credit cards or debit cards, through a payment gateway.
The SETC has a fleet strength of over thousand buses and the system will involve issue of about 1.8 crores tickets a year.
