Vallavan - Tamil hip-hop Band from Malaysia

Maybe am not young enough to “really” appreciate this - but no lack of talent in their Music. “vallavan” really rock!

This one is another one of the “Vallavan” performances from Vijay TV. Surprisingly, I don’t see our super-star Dhanush not enjoying their music. Come on Dhanush, if you can’t dance and enjoy to these beats then you are wasting your dancing moves :)

Superstar Rajinikanth visits Tirumala Tirupathi Balaji for success of Sivaji The Boss

Superstar Rajinikanth has predicted that his forthcoming movie Sivaji will be a record-breaking commercial hit.

sivaji1
It is expected to be released during summer even as the euphoria created by his “Chandramukhi” is still continuing unabated.

Rajini made a surprise visit to Tirupati-Tirumala where he offered worship at the Sri Venkateswara temple on Feb. 15th night.

It raised many eyebrows as few know that Tirumala is also in his list of places of worship. His favorite destination is Himalayas where he goes often for meditation and relaxation.

His visit to Tirupati/Tirumala was a surprise. He spent almost an hour inside the Balaji temple and was given prasadam by the temple authorities.

As news of Rajini’s visit spread in the temple town, Media persons and cameramen gathered in large numbers outside the temple. More than 300 fans also joined them and were waiting.

It was 8.50 p.m when Rajini came out of the temple. He walked fast to his as the waiting media persons and photographers and fans rushed to meet him, amidst slogans of “Rajinikanth Vazhga.”

Rajini talked to mediapersons and answered their questions hurriedly.

When asked about his latest film Sivaji, the actor replied that it came out ‘very well’. He had visited the Tirumala temple before the shooting of this film commenced.

“I had prayed that the film should shape up well. Now that the shooting is over and the film has come out very well as he had wished, I came again to offer worship at the temple and sought God’s blessings for the grand success of the film. I will visit the temple after the release of the film and my prayer is granted.”

What is the storyline? Rajinikanth evaded the question and said if he told the story at the spot, it won’t be understood. “You will understand only when you see the film”.

Asked to comment on Director Shankar’s work, Rajinikanth said he has done a wonderful job and it is certain that the film would be a great commercial success.

What is the film which the actor considered as his best so far? “Basha’, pat came the reply. Rajini added that compared to Basha, Sivaji has come out “hundred times” better.

Melodious re-discovery of Indian folk songs on the Internet by Shefali Bhushan

In this age of rock, hip-hop and heavy metal music, it’s not easy to get a folk song to climb the charts.

But 35-year-old Shefali Bhushan doesn’t think so.

Her website http://beatofindia.com
is all about re-discovering forgotten folk melodies of India.
And it has many takers.

Six years ago, Shefali, a documentary filmmaker and her colleague N.K. Sharma, a theatre director, felt that Indian folk music needed to be revived before it was lost forever in forgotten corners of the country.

“We felt that there is a lot of paucity in the area of revival of folk music and whatever work is being done by organisations like the Sangeet Natak Akademi is just not enough. Hence we decided to go to these folk artistes themselves and give them a platform through the Internet,” Shefali told IANS.

That’s when beatofindia.com was born in 2000. Joined by two more colleagues and armed with some information, the team set off for the Kumaon belt. And thus began their journey.

“We first went to a village near Haldwani in Uttaranchal where we met a 15-year-old girl who sang two beautiful songs in Nyoli folk form for us. Then we went to Nainital where we met a poet and he recited some of his poetry. We recorded all of these,” she explains.

They even went all the way to the Nepal border, where they met an old man who sang for them for hours. “It was amazing. He must have been 85 years old but had each line of the song inscribed in his mind,” exclaims Shefali.

From travelling to the deep interiors of Allahabad in search of an Ala singer who was popular once upon a time for singing in households in monsoons to sitting up the entire night to record songs of the Kabir Pant - a group of singers who have been singing for generations in Malwa, Madhya Pradesh - Shefali and colleagues have done everything!

“This journey has been like re-discovering India itself,” Shefali remarks.

Nearing 800, all the songs are now up on their website and, as the team says, has caught on with the people.

“Now we have a record label and are on the verge of signing a distribution deal with a big brand so that we get an even better platform,” she says. Ten percent royalty of the revenue goes to the artistes.

They have also released albums, organised live concerts and solo performances of the artistes. The group has made a documentary film called “Colours of the Earth”, based on the life of a folk artiste, and has been screened in India and the US, and has earned rave reviews.

While they admit that distribution, marketing and publicity are the biggest challenges that they face, Shefali says that the response is nonetheless very encouraging. “We are flooded with enquiries, suggestions and requests ever day.”

She adds that although the response is extremely good from NRI communities across the globe, many small metros here have also responded well.

The website has over 11,000 members at present.

Cricket World Cup – Last minute luck for other teams than Australia

Brett Lee ankle injury is really a setback for Australia. He is a match winner and I was sure Australia will win the World Cup 2007, a few months back seeing their Ashes sweep. But their washout against New Zealand is a shock. And the entire team is total disarray.

Next comes New Zealand. as the favorites. The West Indies pitches will suit them.

As for Pakistan and West Indies sure West Indies have home grounds and crowd for a chance to win.

And India? Hard to predict. Though strong in batting, bowling is weak and sure spin won’t work in Windies pitches.

Sure the World Cup 2007 will be a distraction for students. And Doordarshan is going to relay all matches!
