The movie starred Anil Kapoor, a popular Bollywood actor in his first leading role. The film deals with an unconventional plot of a male in love with an older female played by the popular actress Lakshmi.
Another famous South Indian director Balu Mahendra was the cinematographer for this movie. Though the movie flopped on its release as it was way ahead of the times, the songs of the movie, comphered by Illayaraja remain popular till today.
Mani Ratnam won the Karnataka State Award for Best Screenplay for the movie.
