Never has so much been written about something that actually will not happen. The much-anticipated Google Phone now sounds like a pipe dream, but firmly in its place is Android, Google’s new software platform that it’s developing with a collection of partners for cell phones.

This anti-announcement was followed by a flood of reporting and analysis noting, among other things, that despite the platform’s Linux roots, it wouldn’t likely be “open.”
